Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert

David Gilbert  is serving his third term as Calhoun County Prosecuting Attorney, first being elected in November, 2012. The prosecutor is the top law enforcement officer in a county but is not a police officer. He has more than 200 statutory duties, which include interpreting and enforcing the laws of the State of Michigan, upholding the Constitution of Michigan and the Constitution of the United States. He and his assistant prosecutors review criminal cases of both adults and juveniles, assist with investigations and prosecute those accused of crimes as well as upholding the rights of victims. This office also protects the rights of children from abuse and neglect and is responsible for establishing paternity and child support.  Prior to being elected County Prosecutor, he gained experience as a trial attorney serving as an assistant and chief assistant prosecutor in other counties as well as being a criminal defense attorney. He has tried many high profile cases throughout the State of Michigan.

A strong advocate for victim’s rights and of holding criminals accountable, he has diligently worked to reduce plea bargaining in Calhoun County to cases where it is the best or only option.  Dave is a former Chair of the Criminal Law Section for the State Bar of Michigan and actively assists the State Bar and State Court Administrator's Office by serving on a number of boards and committees. He has served on the Representative Assembly for the State Bar of Michigan, chairing the Special Issues Committee and has been involved on many State and local Committees, Boards and Organizations.

David Gilbert resides in Pennfield with his wife Karen. They  have two children, Shelby and Mitchell, as well as Holli, Calhoun County's court advocate canine.
